Impact of Artificial Intelligence on International students in Higher Education
Opportunities and issues relating to the implementation of AI and machine learning in higher education are currently being discussed by researchers. Wang et al argue that international students face challenges when pursuing their higher education in a foreign country and that higher education institutions are exploring Artificial Intelligence to address these challenges (Wang et al, 2023). The article examines different applications of AI technology, such as predictive analysis systems, adaptive testing technology and chatbots. In addition, Wang et al analyze some of the risks, challenges and opportunities when applying such technology to meet the needs of international students. Risks being discussed relate to ethical implications, language proficiency and cultural differences.
The authors argue that weighing the obstacles and limitations is crucial when looking to implement AI in higher education. Universities play an important role in defining the scope and usage of AI for educational support and benefit. As such, universities should recognize that AI cannot replace the guidance and expertise of human educators and at the same time universities should take an active role when delineating the whats, hows and whys of implementation (Ibid).
Sharing my own reflection, leading in the same direction, a significant and interdisciplinary topic of research and discussion is how we should relate Artificial Intelligence and its use to academic activities generally, as well as to the function of learning and knowledge specifically. Underlying views and principles on higher education, its function and purpose, however abstract, cannot be separated from the subject matter itself. Therefore, understanding AI in higher education must not only include application of technology as such, but should also reinvigorate thought and debate about what the core principles of higher education are. Relating to this discussion, Wang et al make a noteworthy contribution.
